A total hip replacement (THR) surgery is a very common joint replacement surgery done in India whereby the diseased cartilage and bone of the hip joint is surgically replaced with artificial materials caled implant which is geerally US FDA approved. Total hip joint replacement involves surgical removal of the diseased ball and socket and replacing them with a metal ball and stem inserted into the femur bone and an artificial plastic cup socket.
Patients with damaged hip joint either due to Trauma, wear-and-tear arthritis, Osteoarthritis or any other cause should consider hip replacement to get rid of the pain and diminishing daily function in order to maintain the quality of life . Osteoarthritis damages the slick cartilage that covers the ends of bones and helps joints move smoothly. Another problem that needs hip replacment surgery is AVN of the hip. AVN or Avascular Necrosis of hip joint in simple language is loss of bone tissue due to lack of blood supply. Patient is generally made to walk next day after the hip replacement surgery performed by Dr J S Virk in Mohali, Punjab.
The decision to have hip replacement surgery should be a cooperative one made by you, your family and your orthopaedic surgeon. The process of making this decision typically begins with a detailed evaluation by the orthopaedic and hip replacement or a joint replacement surgeon in Punjab.
Diagnosis of and planning for a hip replacement surgery can be done through the following invevstingations::
Dr J S Virk prefers to first evaluate the patient and the hip joint during the first consultation at his clinic in Mohali, Punjab. The first investigation that would be ordered would be a simple X Ray. In case Dr J S Virk feels that patient needs a hip joint replacement surgery then he will order for an MRI of hip to plan the surgery and implants.
The hip joint and the joints adjacent to it will be evaluated. There will be several blood tests to assess the state of the liver and kidneys. ECG and X-ray chest will be taken for ensuring a sound heart and lungs. We use FDA approved imported titanium implants which is just right sized for your hip joint. Your stay in the hospital would be 5 days for a single hip and 7 days for both the hips.
Physical Therapy will begin in 48 hrs and the therapist will help the patient in walking and reinstating the movement. Patients will start walking using a walker and crutches. After discharge, you are given a complete program for rehabilitation which you should continue for the next 45-60 days during which you would recover completely and would be able to do all kinds of activities.
